great game, i remember this game made me know what opengl is，lol....
Judging by the resources, characters and weapons in this game it could've been a great follow up of Quake 2 if they didn't aim for a multiplayer deathmatch styled game.
Reading John Carmack's "plan" file(think, old-school version of a blogpost), dated "Jun 16, 1998". They originally planned Quake 3 to be a a sequel to Quake 2, but quickly switched on pushing Quake 3 as primarily a deathmatch game. Two reasons were, with the rate of progress to the game engine development, they'd never hit their target release date if they pushed on with the original plan(and I understand the fear, as that was the time were Duke Nukem Forever and Daikatana not getting released, exist). And, with both time and staff constraints(read up on the credits list when you exit quake 3 and see how small their team was), They'd rather make the best of one aspect, than to make two mediocre aspects.

I've been retro gaming lately and finally got into q3 and wow I'm so rusty on this game I can't even beat the bots on hardcore - nightmare mode LoL! Along UT and HL this old games are just timeless.
Many more old games are timeless than just the few you mentioned.
However personally I think HL is being overrated a tad, especially if you say it is one of only three games which are timeless.
My most favorite Quake 3 Arena analogy that I found somewhere in the internet; "It's just like a finely-tuned, high-performance, race car. It's fast, it feels great, and people who likes looking under the hood would find the inside is just as interesting. Yes, it basically does only one thing, unlike other types of land vehicles(like, the SUV). But you can't deny, it does that one thing, so, very, great."
Never mind, I just found out it's actually called Pain Keep Arena, and that Painkiller was actually the name of a bot in the first map of its solo ladder mode.
