More than two years after 1.4.22 and one and a half years after 1.5 R6, it is most certainly time to explain what has been going on.


A bit of story time first about what am I even doing and how did I end up here. All the way back in May 2017, I was digging around the Bitbucket repository and found a mirror leading to the in-development version. After playing around with that for some time, I started reporting bugs and other issues. Seeing how some were not resolved, I decided to make some changes myself. Right around this time it was already August with the release of the first 1.5 beta versions and me digging around in the game, having all kinds of ideas. This lead to the last version of the original 1.5, R4. After that, things changed. I was suddenly part of the team working on gameplay balance related changes, which can be seen in a horrible state in R6. Here is where everything went wrong. It turned out later, that I joined in either the best or worst time. Development was right about to be stopped by Alundaio, who didn't want to work on the mod anymore. With me joining, I became the fresh source of power, trying to keep going. It was going fine for a surprisingly long amount of time, but then nearly everybody had to take longer and longer breaks. What I did in the end is completely ruin the development by going off track, trying to completely redo major parts of the game.

All that lead to the current state. Development paused back in the end of July 2018 with some small activity spikes up until around October. I took my own long break, also waiting and hoping people will come back. Without team lead and our C++ programmer, I tried to change the engine under the mod with the help from a Russian team, to one that uses mid July 2018 Open X-Ray as a base, which is 64 bit. It wasn't very successful to say the least.

So, what next? Well, the mod needs manpower in order to be continued. Mainly C++ and LUA programmers, but anything helps, even writers and good QA. If you can help, leave some information about what you can do in the comments. If you know someone, please send them our way.

Update: I can no longer promise any activity from my end. After many years with stalker, I have to start making major changes in life, which will not leave enough time for a project this big.

Is there any recommendation to play version "1.5 beta" over the stable "1.4.22"?

I'd argue that the 1.5 beta might actually be more stable than 1.4.22, so it depends whether you prefer stability of 1.5 or a bigger choice of possible addons of 1.4.22.

Hey thanks, great that you answer! Good to know that the "1.5" might actually be more stable than the old "1.4.22" at times. Just I was playing around for a while with both the game versions and my intuition is that the "1.5" would like to move from original surreal 'S.T.A.L.K.E.R.' vibe to a more visceral and realistic thing. I mean, I do not know if this is only me or is the gun zoom gone now in the "1.5"? Unfortunately, I have found some good looking addons for the "1.5" to sadly malfunction - but again, this could only be me. In the end, I have found my way with the "1.4.22" and the mod count that I am considering at the moment for later time - playing the trilogy first - is such:

^ NTcore memory patch
^ Dan's Nano Hud by DeadlyDanDaMan and CrommCruac
^ Original Weapons Renewal version "3" (OWR) by r_populik and team
^ MP5, UMP45 and MP5SD reload reanimation for OWR by eulampius (override)
^ Upgradeable binocular version "1.3" by Neadez (compatibility version for OWR)
^ DoctorX Dynamic Anomalies version "2.1"
^ Immersive fast travel version "1.0" by SpikensbroR
^ Call of Chernobyl Sound Restoration version "3.2" by Balathruin
^ Gore Mod version "1.2" by L00 and Kahvana
* the "/gamedata/textures/pfx" effects were swapped for ones from Better Blood mod by Detroit_Vigilanty for Call of Pripyat
* notice: it looks like the Gore Mod is two "wm_blood_drop_?.dds" textures short, as there should be four according to texture definition in "/gamedata/configs/system.ltx"
* edit of "/appdata/user.ltx" for "r__wallmark_ttl" parameter change of value to "300"

For example, the immersive fast travel for "1.4.22" fails on the "1.5" unfortunately. Playing the 'Clear Sky' I kind of got used to that feature so I got comfy maybe. The reanimated guns for "1.5" crashed on detector draw for me, besides when I let it go for the sake of vanilla setup, the game as if started to work better. The binoc mod for "1.5" - which adds backpack extra option - is not the same if to think about it, also if to not mind the quirky risk of loosing all backpack upgrades. The 'CoC' version "1.5" also crashed on me when accepting a quest from the trader in the 'Dark Valley' as a bandit.

Well, I guess that I have chosen the abundance of addons in the end. Sorry for the rant.

bruh i just wanted to fool around and use the spawner. TO my amazement the vehicles in call of chernobyl are 1000x better than any other vehicle mod ive tried. You can actually drive around in this game with a strong durable vehicle and anomalies effect your car very little (its actually realistic that way like the cars heavy)

you gotta use version 1.4 (1.4.2 works also) and add -dbg to the end of the target box if you create a shortcut to the stalker-coc executable

then press esc s to open the spawn menu while in game. o to start engine. Its incredible.

You just wait until the Definitive Car Pack Addon drops - it will be light years ahead of anything vehicle related for STALKER that was ever made.

As far as I'm aware there's no new releases, just a couple of interesting repositories.
Another one to watch is the guy who's trying to port coc to the latest xray version
